Mission Statement
The Philly Roller Girls are out to shake up Philadelphia with our
spirited athleticism and fierce, rock ‘n roll attitude. The league aims
to provide opportunities for women to participate in a sport that
is all their own – encouraging the development of leadership and
teamwork skills and creating a space for camaraderie and healthy
competition. Our goal is to develop exceptional athletic ability and
sportswomanship, to promote goodwill amongst our skaters and in our
community, and to represent Philadelphia athletically on a national
level.
The Philly Roller Girls entertain our fans while providing exposure and
positive attention for sponsors. We are hard working athletes dedicated
to presenting an alternative sports experience that is both cutting-edge
and socially responsible. We promote physical and mental strength and
the energy, intensity and independent spirit of women.

League Facts
• The Philly Roller Girls were founded in March 2005.

• We are a skater owned and operated LLC. Every event is planned,
orchestrated, and executed exclusively by the Philly Roller Girls.

• The Philly Roller Girls are the Delaware Valley’s only member of the
Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), the national governing
body for women’s flat track roller derby (www.wftda.com).

• The league consists of three teams that compete throughout our
home season from March until June, which includes the Warrior Cup
Championship bout. The teams are: the Broad Street Butchers, the
Heavy Metal Hookers, and the Philthy Britches (2006 and 2007 Warrior
Cup Champions).

• Philadelphia is represented on a national level by our league’s all-star
team, the Liberty Belles, who bout teams from across the country for
national ranking by the WFTDA. The Liberty Belles are currently in the top
ten (of almost thirty teams) in national rankings.

• In March 2007, the league orchestrated and hosted the first East Coast
Derby Extravaganza, a monumental weekend in the world of roller derby,
where leagues from across the nation and thousands of fans gathered in
Philadelphia to celebrate the sport. Due to the extreme success of the first
Extravaganza, it will be held once again this year on June 21 and 22 and is
expected to draw an upwards of 4,500 spectators throughout the weekend.

• All profits cover league expenses with a portion going to charity.

• The league has organized food and school supplies drives for the People’s
Emergency Center, volunteered with the Adoption Center of Delaware Valley
& the AIDS Fund, and raised funds for the Attic Youth Center and the Hero
Thrill Show, a charity benefiting the families of police and fire fighters.

FAQs
How do you play roller derby?
A bout is played by two teams that skate around a track trying to score points against one another
in a series of two-minute jams.
Each team has five players on the track at once: one pivot, three blockers, and one jammer. The
pivots and blockers make up the pack that the jammers skate through.
The jammer is the point scorer for the team. She races through the pack, earning one point for
each blocker of the opposing team that she passes legally. She is identified by the star on her helmet.
The pivot blocks at the front of the pack, she sets the pace by communicating with her
teammates. She is identified by the stripe on her helmet.
The blockers try to prevent the opposing jammer from scoring points while
simultaneously assisting their own jammer through the pack. There are legal and illegal
blocks, and a penalty system that punishes rule breakers. A bout consists of two 30-
minute periods that are composed of two-minute jams. The team with the most points at
the end of the bout wins.

Why a flat track vs. banked track?
Skating on a flat track puts the action and intensity right in the faces of our trackside fans and
makes for a really exciting show. It also makes us eligible to compete with the growing number
of leagues across the country that are members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association
(WFTDA) and to compete in regional and national tournaments with these leagues.

Where does the league skate?
Our home for the 2008 season is the Sportsplex in Feasterville (Northeast Philly), a multi-rink
facility designed especially for roller sports, featuring sport court flooring, bleacher
seating and a bar for our fans. The Sportsplex is convenient to I-95, US-1 and public
transportation.

Isn’t roller derby “fake”? I remember it being like
wrestling on wheels.

Not at all! While our skaters have alter egos in the form of fishnet-wearing, bruise-toting aggressors
with names to match, all our moves are real and unscripted. You can be sure if you see someone
taking a hit or fall it’s just as painful as it looks!

That sounds dangerous – why do you do it?!
While all sports are unpredictable and the potential for injury exists, we train intensively to perfect
our ability to take falls and hits. The appeal for many of the skaters and fans is the adrenaline rush
of the hard-hitting action.

Are there only women in your league?
Yes, but we do accept volunteers of either gender. If you are dedicated and capable, we want your help in the form of referees, announcers, cheerleaders and water boys and girls! Support the Philly Roller Girls
Roller Derby attracted massive audiences in the 70s and had quite a cult following. The
modern, national resurgence in the form of feisty all-women leagues has already proven
to have the same appeal. We’ve struck a chord with people who remember Philadelphia
skater Judy Arnold and used to cheer for the Warriors. Families with children come to our
bouts bringing handmade signs for their favorite skaters. Rock ‘n roll twenty-somethings
who don’t typically get into sports show up to our events in droves. Sports fans that are
accustomed to paying big money to watch a game through binoculars love the in-yourface
feel of sitting a few feet away from the action at our bouts.

The Philly Roller Girls attract a very diverse and very large crowd, with over 900
spectators coming out to cheer us on and have a great time. We’d like to offer you the
opportunity to support our up-and-coming league and reach our ever-expanding fan base.
There are many ways for you to get your name out there and associated with the energy
and intensity of our league. Your business can increase brand awareness through the Philly
Roller Girls at our bouts, online at www.phillyrollergirls.com, and through our fundraisers
and events. We also present you with the opportunity to get your product directly into the
hands of our fans when you donate samples to our raffle baskets and VIP bags.
