PRG TRYOUT FAQs Thank you for your interest in attending Philly Roller Girl Tryouts! Below you will find a list of frequently asked questions that may help you prepare for the tryout day: Q: When and where should I show up? A: Tryouts for the 2010 season will be held on November 22, 2009 at 11:00am SHARP to 2:00pm at Millennium Skate World, 1900 Carman St., Camden, NJ 08105, (856) 757-9460. Please arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to sign waivers, have a photograph taken, get a name tag, and put on your skates and gear. Once the tryout has begun, late arrivals will not be admitted. BE ON TIME. Q: I don’t have a car, how do I get there? A: Bus from Philadelphia: NJ Transit Bus 409, PhillyCarShare.org, Zipcar.org Q: What should I wear? A: This isn’t a fashion show. You’re going to sweat harder and stink more than you have in your life. Wear breathable, flexible, workout clothes. No jeans. Most of us wear spandex leggings, gym shorts, knee socks, tank tops, or t-shirts. Q: Do I need my own skates? Should I buy new skates? A: If you have your own quad skates, please bring them. Rollerblades are not permitted. If you do not have skates, there are rentals available at the rink. The rentals are not always the best quality, so feel free to pick up a pair of inexpensive roller skates to get you started. You can get cheap skates at any big sports store like Dicks Sporting Goods or Sports Authority for about $20 - $30. However, if and when you pass tryouts, you should immediately research and purchase a good pair of quad skates. A decent pair will cost anywhere from $200 to $800 or more depending on your choices and budget. Talk with veteran skaters about their preferences and ask to try on their skates. I urge you to not invest in expensive skates until you’ve done your homework. Some websites that supply good derby skates and gear: rollergirlskates.com, lowpriceskates.com, rollerderbyskate.net, rollerderbydepot.com, sincityskates.com, and Judge Knot, a PRG ref, is our local league skate and wheel dealer – so talk to him too! Q: What kind of protective gear must I have? A: Full protective gear is REQUIRED for all tryouts: knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, and helmet. Mouthguards will be required at the first practice. To get started, rollerblade pad packages can be picked up for around $30 at any major sporting goods store. We do have a bin of old pads that may be borrowed, however, we strongly encourage you bring your own that fit correctly. If and when you pass tryouts, you should immediately research and purchase good protective gear. This is a full-contact sport and injuries are a common occurrence. The better the pad quality, the better the protection. Some recommended brands: Knee pads: $30 - $100: 187, Rector Fat Boy, Pro-Tec, Triple 8, Pro-Designed Elbow pads: $25 - $80: 187, Rector Fat Boy, Pro-Tec, Triple 8, Pro-Designed Wrist Guards: $20 - $60: Triple 8, Rector, TSG, Pro-Designed Helmets: $20 - $40: Triple 8, Pro-Tec Some websites that supply good derby skates and gear: rollergirlskates.com, lowpriceskates.com, rollerderbyskate.net, rollerderbydepot.com, sincityskates.com, prodesigned.com Q: How often are tryouts held? A: PRG tryouts are conducted once per year in late November / early December. Q: What am I expected to demonstrate at tryouts? A: PRG Tryouts are held to assess a recruit’s physical ability, skill, form, balance, control, and agility. We are not expecting perfection, however, you must be able to skate and execute the required skill demonstrations to the best of your ability. We hold two pre-tryout skate workshops to go over the basics. The tryout will be held audition-style with three incremental rounds and cuts made after each round. You will advance to the next round based on a series of skill demonstrations. If you pass round 2, you will be interviewed by the Interview panel, and move on to round three. The tryout is complete after round 3 and you will be notified by phone, within 48 hours, whether or not you have been accepted to begin the PRG Fresh Meat Training Program.
